Excerpt:"Trauma, homicide, and similar violent events are a leading cause of death in young women. As many as 10 to 20 percent of pregnant women suffer physical trauma (American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, 1998; Rickert and associates, 2003). Injury-related deaths are the most commonly identified cause of maternal morbidity in Maryland, Utah, and North Carolina (Harper and Parsons, 1997; Horon and Cheng, 2001; Jacob and colleagues, 1998). And in a California study of 4.8 million pregnancies by El Kady and co-workers (2004, 2005), almost 1 in 350 women were hospitalized for injuries from assaults. In an audit from Parkland Hospital, Hawkins and associates (2007) studied 1682 pregnant women who presented to the trauma service. Motor vehicle accidents and falls accounted for 85 percent of injuries, whereas 10 percent were due to assaults.Many forms of blunt trauma are encountered in pregnancy.
